Acupuncture therapy has been practiced in China for thousands of years. Its underlying philosophy is that the healthy functioning of the body is governed by the flow of qi, (often translated as energy), through a system of channels under the skin. When this flow of qi is impaired, illness occurs. By inserting fine needles at various points along the channels, the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved.
The flow of qi can be disrupted in many ways: physical trauma, emotional upset, poor diet and overwork are all common examples. At OM House Clinic, we investigate the underlying causes of problems and how these have affected the body, and then select the most appropriate treatment for each individual. Treating everyone as an individual is a core principle of acupuncture and is vital to assisting the body to rebalance itself successfully.
Blockages in the flow of qi can manifest as pain, hot or cold sensations or skin colour changes. These signs, along with pulse and tongue diagnosis, can help determine which points and channels are most suitable for treatment. Acupuncture can be combined with other techniques such as moxibustion or cupping.
